Watercolor Holiday Scene + Big Giveaway

Hello Pretty Pink Posh fans! This is Yana and today I am sharing a video tutorial showing how to create a watercolor winter scene card using a brand-new Winter Woodland stamp set.

I’m starting to work on my project by arranging images I wanted to use for this card on a piece of watercolor panel inside my Mini MISTI. You don’t have to use a stamp positioner for this project, you can easily stamp a scene like this using a clear block.

Watch my video tutorial below to learn how I made this card.

Watch the video above  I  Watch the video in HD on YouTube

I picked watercolor paper for my stamping as I planed to use watercolors to color my critters and the background or the night sky behind them. You can chose to color these using any other mediums you like – perhaps colored pencils or alcohol markers. Whatever you chose make sure you are using the correct ink and paper type for your coloring medium.

I used Arches Hot Pressed watercolor paper as this is my go-to paper for stamping and watercoloring. The Hot Pressed means that this paper has very little to no texture which is a preferred quality when you plan to do a lot of stamping.

For my scene I picked a moose, he is standing on a free-hand painted hill; my moose has two love birds sitting on top of his antlers looking at each other. There’s also a sentiment that reads “Warm Hugs and Lots of Love” and finally the background behind my critters and the sky is filled with holly branches and they look as if they are coming from 3 sides framing this scene in a way.

Once I finished stamping my scene (I heat embossed it using Antique Gold embossing powder) I taped my watercolor panel onto a board and watercolored using Daniel Smith watercolors.

I broke my coloring process down into 2 main stages – coloring the critters and coloring the background. You want to make sure to wait for the coloring to dry when you move onto coloring the background to avoid having a huge mess and avoid colors bleeding one into another.

I did a bit of wet on wet coloring by wetting the surface of the paper first with water and then adding the pigment. I used just a handful of colors for my painting today and all of these can be found in my exclusive Daniel Smith Yana’s Watercolor Palette.

Keep in mind you can use any other watercolors to paint this, even Distress inks can be easily used to color a scene like this. In case you are curious to learn what colors I used here are the name: I went with Transparent Brown to color the moose and branches, Pyrrol Red to color the birds and berries, Undersea Green to color the leaves and Indigo to color the sky.

Once my coloring was done I trimmed my panel to 4 x 5 ¼” and foam mounted it onto an A2 card. I felt like the sentiment on this card wasn’t visible clearly enough so I heat embossed it in white embossing powder onto a piece of red cardstock and foam mounted onto the scene. I believe this helped the red color on the card pop and really tied everything together.

I embellished this card using a few metallic gold confetti pieces and coated red berries using Glossy Accents for a pop of dimension.

  3. Beautiful card! I love this winter woodland set and you showcased it beautifully in this card. Your night winter sky is just gorgeous and brings a serene feel to the card. The holly branches frame the scene perfectly. And I agree that the red sentiment was exactly what was needed to make the other little touches of red in the scene pop.

  4. Gosh, I love every new product that comes our way! I buy your cute border dies, and embellishments…of course! Another product I like from PPP is those little sets of one or two small character stamps and a matching die such as ‘Birdie Notes’ & ‘Happy Snowman’.

  10. More stamps but not cutsey ones. More unusual ways to accent our cards. More seasonal colors. You do a wonderful job so it’s hard to improve!

  37. Oh! And in 2018, I would love to see stamps sets ideal for creating scenes. I’m big fan of larger stamps that take center stage on a card, and that require no masking. However, I’m also a fan of putting different elements together to create a scene. I would love to see more and more sequins, too, cause who doesn’t love them!!! :)

  38. I love all of your watercolor cards! Gotta try your dot card one day.

  41. Fabulous card!!! I love the rich colors!!! Thanks for the chance to win this Awesome prize!!!

  42. Very pretty card!

I think any projects featuring more cute animals would be good. Like kitten cards and such. You have a really great sense for putting good colors together.

  43. How gorgeous Yana! What a stunning watercolour style and I wouldn’t have expected it with these whimsical stamps, but it’s really pretty!

  44. Your card is great. It really looks like a snowing scene. Thanks for the giveaway too.

  45. Such a beautiful card!!!! I LOVE PPP and hope to see many more theme weeks on the PPPblog:)

  46. Oh my goodness ! Yana, your card is a pure delight !! About the question, I’d dream to find some French sentiment sets !!

  47. Your watercolored scene is so beautiful! I would love to see more seasonal sequin mixes – spider shapes with black and orange for Halloween, holly leaves and red sequins for Christmas, snowflakes and chunky glitter for winter scenes.

  48. Love the spectacular coloring on this gorgeous card!
I love themed shaker card mixes! Card tutorials also, especially using your awesome dies!

  49. Wow! What a stunning card! Your watercolouring is really breathless. Yana!
In 2018 I would like to see from Pretty Pink Posh Italian sentiment stamps and more travel themed sets.

  50. Yana you have created a really beautiful card, Love the red berries and the gold sequins, which have really finished of the winter scene perfectly…
PPP love your products and love all your releases, Would love to see a few more stamps and die sets and doggies. Being from the southern hemishpere would love to see some summer christmas stamps and dies, it’s hard to make Christmas cards with snow scenes, as much as I love the traditional scenes. Ones i have seen are so quiche with Kola’s, Kangaroo’s and Tassie Devils under topical palm trees at the beach, we are so much more than that. Where I live we had 45′ C on Christmas day last year…

  51. I love you stamps, so I know you will always be releasing adorable stamps, but what about having them in bundles or kits to create different themed cards? Its always helpful when you order everything in one bundle and create because I always forget to look for certain items and I always just end up with the stamps and dies, and don’t have little extras to embellish with.

  52. What a gorgeous card!!! I’d love to see bigger stamps and dies, as I make larger sized cards!!

  53. This card is simply enchanting! I love the colors and design!

  54. Fabulous card Yana. PPP does cute and sparkley perfectly. It would be good to see some more blokey goodies in 2018

  55. Yana, you never disappoint! What a delightful card, looks so complex, but with your tutorial it all comes together!!

  56. i would just like to see even bigger selection..more colors and themes.

  57. Wow wow wow ! Your colouring is just amazing ! I absolutely love how you made this Stamp come to live
I love all things cute so I would love to see more :)

  58. I love, love, love your card! I love how it looks like it’s snowing but it’s not. You’re watercoloring is amazing! I have a pad of water color paper and I always just use my card stock when I water color. Actually, I forgot that I bought that paper the last time I did a watercoloring. Does it really matter if you use watercolor paper or card stock when you watercolor? I mean, what is the difference in how it looks? My last watercolor doesn’t look like yours but my watercolors are Twinkling H20’s so they are not like most watercolors anyway. Thanks again for showing your colorful card and letting us see it snow. We had flurries the other day and they didn’t stick around long but that was our snow. It looks like it’s snowing a lot more in your card. Thanks also for giving us the chance to win something. When I win, I will buy a whole bunch of things and post my cards that I make for everyone to see.

  59. Hi Yana, I watched your video tutorial over three times, just to make sure I got all the processes and techniques clear in my head. When I looked on PrettyPinkPosh store there did not appear to be many inks available to purchase. Although, there was watercolours and the pearlescent media you used for the snow at the end of the card. I would be very apprehensive to watercolour my detail and then the background in fear of messing up the work I had already done. You were very professional and experienced at this I could see. I loved the arrangement of the holly branches and the moose with the love birds on top of his horns. I did agree with you about the greeting; it looked so much better on the red banner with white embossing powder it made it ‘pop’ from the card stock. I have not ever purchased from PrettyPinkPosh’s store (I believe Jennifer McGuire does, because she has a lot of the different sequin sets), but I live in the UK so I am unsure whether you are able to ship to me or whether the shipping cost would just be too much for me to pay on top of the money for the goods. I am out of work you see due to ill health as I have secondary breast cancer so I cannot over spend on my craft stash. Although, I have had quite a few orders for Christmas cards and I have put some money away to spend in the New Year. I looked at the stamp and die sets that are in the store and I think they are all the type I particularly like with critters and greetings on one set. What I could not see was any border stamps or dies – that would be of interest to me, thank you Yana. If you do not put any other projects up before the holidays – HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
