Featured Blogger- Jenny Simmons
Hello and Happy Monday!
Oh goodness, words cannot even begin to describe how much I have looked forward to this feature. Recently, after my accident {story here}, I have decided to pursue my dreams and goals and step outside my comfort zone a little more. This particular Featured Blogger post is one of those steps.
For those who follow my blog, you know I’m a huge lover of music. While I don’t discriminate against many genres, I always have a special place in my heart for CCM, Contemporary Christian music. It’s this genre that lifts my spirits and really allows me to worship the Lord. These songs always seem to pull at my heartstrings and so many of the songs relates to where I am.
This month, I am doing a feature with one of my favorite bloggers, who also happens to be famous in the CCM circle. She was part of the group Addison Road, that released multiple records and toured all across the country for a decade. Not only is she extremely gifted musically, she is open and honest and has an amazing personality. I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to Jenny Simmons.
Let’s start off with some blogging questions!
Tell us about your blog! When and why did you start it?
My husband said, “Jen, you have like 5 million words a day and I can honeslty only listen to about 500,000 of them. You have to start writing. You have to find an outlet.” So I did! He has always encouraged me in blogging- and like many things- I am certain that without his constant persuasion I would have quit a long time ago. Discipline is my weakness, so it’s been quite the gift to have someone who believes in me enough to push me past my own level of discipline. I’ve been blogging for five years now! I’ve never done anything for 5 years!
What inspires you for your posts?
I’m a storyteller. I’m constantly eavesdropping :) Constantly watching little things going on in the world around me that perhaps others don’t pay much attention to. Constantly taking pictures in my head. Constantly drawing spiritual implications out of really mundane things like leaves, clouds, a good meal with friends or an annoyingly long line at Starbucks. I have a deep love for people and nature and I try and capture both through my writing. Telling a story the way it is unfolding in my own head is great therapy for me!
Is there a specific post (of yours) that is your favorite?
I like the post called Line Lover because it describes my favorite part of my job. Another called Daddy.Puppy.Peoples. Because it describes the beauty of my little girl’s heart. And my final favorite is called I Don’t Care, But I Do, But I Don’t. A very transparent blog about listening to criticism and being redirected off myself and back onto Jesus.
Do you read blogs yourself? If so, what are your favorites?
I wish I read blogs, but I don’t! Occasionaly I will read Don Millers, but other than that, I don’t ever think about it. The same way that it doesn’t occur to me to listen to music! So I am a writer of music and stories who doesn’t read many contemporary stories or listen to music!
What is the thing you enjoy most about blogging?
I love the way blogging has allowed me to develop a community of friends all over the world. I’ve actually made life-long friends with some of the people who comment on my blog. We share life together in that strange, on-line, sort of way. I also love that blogging allows me to share my life with people who may have otherwise assumed things about me that are not true. I.E. I am a rich, famous, super-strong Christian girl who has it all together and is generally better than other girls. I am none of those things. I like that through blogging, I can dispel the myth that a person on a stage is somehow any different than the next person. When you have a place to tell stories of normal life: mistakes, pain, triumphs, disasters and mom failures, all of a sudden, you become just another person.
Do you ever find it difficult to be “real” and put yourself out there?
Ha! I didn’t read this question before answering the last one! I’m actually the exact opposite. I find it hard to not bare all to the world. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I am an open book. If anything, the struggle for me has always been not sharing too much and creating healthy boundaries that protect my marriage, my daughter, my friends and family… while also being able to speak truthfully about the events in my life and the way those play our in my heart and soul.
Okay, now onto some fun questions…..
How did you know you wanted to be a singer?
I still don’t know! I think when you are a little kid, you gravitate towards something that you love. And if you are lucky, you don’t ever have to give that up. I always wrote my own newspapers and charged my parents money to come listen to me sing Amy Grant songs in the bathroom (it has the best acoustics, you know!). I’ve always loved singing.
What has been your proudest moment as an musical artist?
Definitely performing at American Airlines center in my hometown of Dallas, TX. It was a sold out crowd of over 16,000 people and I was very pregnant. As in, my doctor was backstage and I was already dilated! I knew it would probably be the biggest show of my career and even though it was only 4 songs, to be able to do that while being so incredibly pregnant… with all our family and friends there… it was just a dream!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
What is spare time?!? Get back to me when I don’t have a pre-schooler who has refused to nap her whole life!!! If I do have free time I love reading Foreign Affairs journal. I’m somewhat of a history/policy junkie- the artist who secretly wants to be a diplomat! So I read and hang out with girlfriends and veg out with my husband.
In the past few months, what are some (or one) of the Lord has taught you?
For some time now I have been revisiting Psalm 23. It seems to be with me all the time. The Lord is my Shepherd. That one statement is so rich in love, mercy and commitment. That anyone would choose to be a shepherd- a good shepherd at that- to a slightly lost, helpless, vulnerable little sheep amazes me. And lately I’ve needed to find myself lost in God’s provision all over again. And so I am trying to dwell there- in a place where I am led by the good shepherd.
Name 5 things that you are most passionate about:
My daughter. My husband. South Sudan. World Concern. The people affected by my music, writing and stories
If you could be remembered for anything, what would you want it to be?
That I was a lover. I loved God, people and life. Pretty simple, but it’s all I care about.
While Jenny was in Seattle, I had the great privilege of getting to meet and chat with her in person. Even though she lost her voice and was incredibly sick, she was still so gracious and sweet. Here’s the picture we took together:
A great big thank you to Jenny for taking the time to answer these questions. Now that you see how fun she is, I’m sure you want to follow her too! Here’s where you can find her:
I hope that you enjoyed this feature and either got introduced to Jenny, or learned more about her. I will admit, this has been my favorite blog post to date, and I can’t wait to see what paths the Lord has for me in the future!
Thank you all for visiting {and leaving some blog love}.
Big hugs…..
Poinsettia Blossoms
Some of you may be coming from the DeNami blog……welcome! I’m thrilled to have you join me on my personal blog for inspiration using the Poinsettia Vines set. This set is so pretty and can be used for everyday cards, in addition to Christmas cards.
Today I went the route of showing how to use this set on a thinking of you card. This little blossom is so pretty and I love how elegant and delicate it looks with pastel colors.
As you can see, I pulled out my Sew Easy tools again. Click here to view my photo tutorial I did a few months back. I cannot seem to stop sewing on my cards! I think it adds such a unique and delicate detailing.
Be sure to stop by the DeNami blog, along with the sweet Wendy Elliot’s blog for more inspiration using this pretty set. There’s a wide gambit of themes and colors- I know you’ll be inspired by them.
So glad you stopped by today. Talk with you all soon!

Thankful Thursday- November 1st
Hello there, friends!
Before I start, thank you to those who left comments on the Random Loves for October post. It was so much fun to read your lists! I spied some new things I’ll have to check out and try. I just love these posts and seeing what you all are enjoying these days. This could get dangerous soon….you all are great enablers! :)
It’s time for Thankful Thursday- here is my list what I’m thankful for this week:
- Family that is willing to drop everything and stay with me since I had a setback in my health this past weekend.
- Had a surge of creativity for some work crafty projects yesterday. Yay for productivity!
- My co-worker bringing her little girl in the other day- such a sweet day brightener!
- Finalized some sponsors for the beginning of 2013 for the 10 Minute Craft Dash. I’m so thankful for these amazing companies and the opportunity to introduce/ showcase them on the blog.
- YOU all. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m thankful for all of your sweet comments, emails and notes. I ♥ you all!
Even though this week has been more than challenging physically, I actually came up with a lot of things I’m thankful for. Recently, my mom challenged me to consciously make an effort each day to list what I’m thankful for, even if they’re “small”. Sweet friends, I’ll make the same challenge to you- what are YOU thankful for this week?
This month, there are tons of thinks going on here on the blog. I have an exciting new Featured Blogger post coming on Monday {with giveaways!}, I’m guest designing on another blog, there’s two new Craft Dash challenges, and then of course, lots of posts throughout the month. I hope you’ll continue to stop by- it just wouldn’t be the same without you. :)
I’ll be back tomorrow with a pastel beauty that showcases sewing. Hope to see you then!
Halloween Wishes

Hello and Happy Halloween!
I’m so sad I haven’t been able to do much for this holiday this year. I had all sorts of plans to do fun pumpkins and some baking, but alas, the accident has gotten the better of me. Hopefully I’ll start feeling better health-wise so I can do some fun things for Thanksgiving! I have all sorts of ideas running through this brain of mine.
I have one last Halloween card to share with you, and it’s one of my favorites from this year. I just love this ghost image and when you pair it with some washi tape, he is even cuter! Have I mentioned how much I ♥ washi tape? It is my obsession right now. So many fun patterns, so many different uses!
If you are a DeNami fan, be sure to head on over to the DeNami blog for news on savings that are coming in the month of November. You can stock up on your washi tape, stamps and even get supplies for your Christmas cards or gifts!
Thank you for stopping by my blog today. From me to you, I wish you and yours a safe Halloween with your family and friends.
I hope to see you tomorrow for my Thankful Thursday post!
Random Loves for October
Oh boy, I almost didn’t get this posted for the month of October! It is mind boggling how quickly this month has gone by. In between work, doctors appointments and health issues, then trying to find time to craft, this month has breezed on by. I can’t believe there’s less than two months until Christmas!
It is no secret I enjoy reality tv shows. Add cooking to the mix and it’s almost a guarantee that I’ll like it. I enjoy Top Chef and I was so excited when I heard that Life After Top Chef was coming to air. I really like Richard Blais and Fabio is just too funny. I love seeing what goes in their real life and how their restaurants are started and the things that go behind-the-scenes.
boots can be found here
It was bound to happen……I have officially purchased my first pair of rain boots. You would think since I live in Seattle, I would have gotten some years ago. I’ll be honest, I have never been a fan of them, but recently with the cute styles and the CRAZY rain, I just couldn’t resist any longer. This turquoise color is so happy, I can’t help but smile everytime I look down.
Winter Candy Apple, Japanese Cherry Blossom and Vanilla Bean Noel.
With the sickness bug floating about, I’m all about anti-bacterial soaps. I simply love the smells at Bath & Body Works- they are goodness in a bottle! While I was looking these up, I noticed that they have a BUNCH of new scents in. I can’t wait to go and smell them! I particularly want to smell Creamy Pumpkin, Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Winter Cranberry & Iced Gingerbread. Yay for yummy seasonal scents!
Since the health bills have been coming in steadily, I’ve been doing my best to cut back on Starbucks. Recently I’ve gone to a new alternative- making my own chai drinks at home! It’s great for the colder weather, but you can also have it iced. It’s easily accessible at the stores {in the tea section} and is fairly inexpensive.
10 Minute Craft Dash #5 Highlights
Blossoms & Scallops
I’m stopping in with a quick little post- I just couldn’t pass up the current CAS-ual Fridays challenge! This challenge was to use kraft and as you may have noticed, I’ve been using it a lot in the recent months. I can’t seem to get enough and sneak it in whenever I can!
For my card, I used a recent set I received from Avery Elle called Blossoms & Blooms. This set is amazing and I can’t wait to show you what I have created with it for next week….. *hint hint*
I apologize for the weird scallops in the photo. The way I edit photos makes it so hard to get those scallops the way they are in real life- I promise, they are perfectly scalloped! :)
I love how easy it is to layer these pretty blossoms. I used three five different images to get this flower- the stem, three blossoms and the flower tip. To top it off, I just couldn’t resist adding a little bit of bling- even CAS cards need a little bling!
I hope you have a great rest of your weekend. Thanks for stopping in!

What is Popularity?
I was recently having a conversation with my mom while we were working and the topic of my being shy came up. I have known from previous conversations with others that I have a tendency to come off as “snobbish, stuck up or arrogant”.{Trust me, I don’t like or aim for this.}
Apparently, with these traits, some may get the impression that one is popular. When my mom told me that some people think I am popular, I literally laughed. What?! Me?! I am far from that. I’m the girl that was homeschooled for most of her life, can be shy to a fault, has a lot of insecurities and can be downright random sometimes. How in the world could I give the impression of being popular?
When I think of someone being popular, I think of celebrities or people who have made a name for themselves in one way or another. While I havepreviously wanted to be popular, I have since brushed that thought aside. With popularity comes a lot of pressures and responsibility thatI’m not sure I would be able to handle. I had a brush with it before and well, it’s just not as glamorous as it is made out to be.
All of this sparked a thought….. what does popularity really mean? What classifies someone as being popular? I’m curious to hear what you all think on this issue and anything related to the issue of popularity.
Thankful Thursday: October 25th
Hello!
It’s Thursday and that means a new Thankful Thursday post to share. I’ll be honest, this week was really hard for me to come up with things to list. It’s been a rough week for me and staying positive and looking on the bright side hasn’t been easy.Praying I can get out of this slump and start feeling better soon!
Even though this list is short, I am super thankful for these things. The saying is true, sometimes it’s the little things in life.
- unexpected guest at work bringing me Starbucks
- yummy soups that keep me warm in this cold weather {and help with being sick}
- the sweet get well card I received {thank you Sheryl!}
- new nail polish color that includes sparkly tips
Sweet friends, what are you thankful for this week? Can’t wait to see your lists!
