Saving Money in 2014

For those who have followed my blog a while, you may recognize the chart below. I blogged about it HERE last year and wanted to share it again for those new to my blog.

If you’re like me, you like to spend money. Online shopping has been my friend since the accident and while I save money by not driving often, I still have a knack for getting surprised when I look at my savings account. I did this challenge for almost six months last year with GREAT results, but with so many doctor bills coming in, I had to dip into the money I saved and that ended my go at this challenge. I will say I am SO thankful that I started it though and was consistent about putting money aside those six months, as it helped a lot with bills and such.

Now that the bills are all paid (except for that gigantic MRI bill that still hasn’t come and I’m praying magically disappears), I wanted to give this challenge a go again. After all, having an extra $1300+ in the savings account at the end of the year is hard to pass up.

savingschart2014We are on the fourth week in 2014, so I have $10 in my savings jar. Yes, I have a jar SEPARATE from my bank account for this challenge. I found that by doing this, I could visually see the money accumulating (which is exciting) and I instilled in myself that I couldn’t touch it.

Who wants to do this challenge with me? I personally a hoping to be able to stick with this the whole year because I’m in desperate need of a new computer. Imagine what YOU could get if you did it! *wink*

  1. Loved this idea last year, but forgot about it after a while. I think the separate jar would actually help me remember to do it. I definitely want to do this this year. :)

  2. I to am doing the challenge but I am doing it backwards. I think it will be hard to come up with the larger amounts the closer I get to Christmas so I have decided to start at the end and work the other way! So far so good.

    1. I was thinking the same thing – doing it in reverse because I think it will be hard trying to come up with the larger amounts of $ at the end of the year. :) Really love this concept.

  3. I love this idea! I’d love to do this with you. When I first looked over the sheet–I was like I could totally do this for a new Mac desktop! Then I saw that we are both in a need of a new computer, hehe. Yay! This will be awesome for me. I’m always wanting to save money but I never have any set goals, and this one looks rather easy to follow. I have a question. If one week I’d like to put in more than I’m supposed to–that’s ok, right?

  4. I’m going to try this. I need the cash for Christmas next year.
We are on the Dave Ramsey program and love it. But I never set aside an envelope for Christmas gifts for the kids.

    Thanks!

  5. Oddly enough, this is my method of saving also, putting aside money for all 52 weeks in the year. I do it in a special savings account but it’s essentially the same thing.

  6. Great idea! I’m in! Love your shop, btw :). Your sequins were the first ones I’ve purchased. Have a great weekend. Heather

  7. Hi Paulina,
I started this challenge midway through December with a group of friends and we are now on week 7, but I decided that I would double my deposits since it is me and my husband. We have $56 plus interest in our account and I can’t wait to see it grow! Good luck with your challenge.

  8. LOVE this! I started this too but decided to do it backwards so that I’m adding more at the start of the year and less at the end during holidays!

  9. I started this challenge as well, but I started with week 51/52 first and now the Jan ones so that I can use this for Christmas shopping money! it is a fun idea and glad I came across it…. I have a decorated paint can for mine to go in!
