What is Popularity?

I was recently having a conversation with my mom while we were working and the topic of my being shy came up. I have known from previous conversations with others that I have a tendency to come off as “snobbish, stuck up or arrogant”.{Trust me, I don’t like or aim for this.}

Apparently, with these traits, some may get the impression that one is popular. When my mom told me that some people think I am popular, I literally laughed. What?! Me?! I am far from that. I’m the girl that was homeschooled for most of her life, can be shy to a fault, has a lot of insecurities and can be downright random sometimes. How in the world could I give the impression of being popular?

When I think of someone being popular, I think of celebrities or people who have made a name for themselves in one way or another. While I havepreviously wanted to be popular, I have since brushed that thought aside. With popularity comes a lot of pressures and responsibility thatI’m not sure I would be able to handle. I had a brush with it before and well, it’s just not as glamorous as it is made out to be.

All of this sparked a thought….. what does popularity really mean? What classifies someone as being popular? I’m curious to hear what you all think on this issue and anything related to the issue of popularity.

  1. Interesting topic Pauline! I think popularity can be defined in several ways. For instance…I have always been popular–every since high school. As class president I know just about everyone–if not all the of the student body and there was no doubt they knew me. However, I was comfortable acknowledging my popular status within my small circle of geeky friends. I think there, all of us were popular within our small circle and comfortable too:)

  2. I was a band geek in H.S. so definitely NOT popular! But I loved music so it didn’t matter. And while I’d love for my crafty presence to be more popular to our community, I’m not willing to sacrifice myself or my basic beliefs for it.

    You are absolutely popular within our stampy/crafty community. You are sweet, kind and always create the most beautiful cards. People remember that and it boosts you forward! Nothing wrong with being popular because you are a decent, kind human being. <3

  3. Love your post Paulina! Thanks for sharing your feelings. I have always been outgoing but was a geek all through school and never popular. I’m happy now that I am confident in myself and comfortable in my own skin and I don’t worry about it anymore – the popularity thing. I’m lucky enough to have lots of great friends now. I think just being happy/comfortable/confident with who you are as a person is the most important thing. Big hugs… I’m sure I’d think you were fabulous if I met you!

  4. I think the term “popular” is just kind-of silly anyways. I was a cheerleader all through high school and two years of college…and I would have never considered myself popular. I had friends, but not tons of them. More close knit than anything else…mostly because I am a bit like you. Shy, quiet until you get to know me, and reserved. It takes time for me to open up and trust people…it’s just part of who God made me.

    It’s so important to just be happy with the way that God made you…that is really all that counts to me! Being popular was just never on my radar. :)
