Featured Blogger- Laura Sterckx

featuredblogger-18

For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of the bloggers that I follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

Today I’m bringing a YOUNG blogger that has so much talent. You may have seen her work in the past- she’s been a guest designer for an Online Card Class, she’s a DT member for the Simon Says Stamps Challenge blog and she’s won different challenge awards. Please give a warm welcome to Laura Sterckx!

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

I start my blog back in June 2011 so I could share my cards and communicate with people from all over the world.

How and when did you get introduced to stamping?

I got introduced to stamping in 2010. I was browsing some crafting videos on YouTube and then I suddenly came across a video from Kristina Werner. I absolutely loved how she created such beautiful cards. Shortly after, I purchased stamps and inks and I was looked. :)

The crafting/ blogging world constantly has new trends. What trends are you really into right now?

I am really into the Clear Wink of Stella pen right now! I could use that pen on every single card. It gives such a beautiful shimmer. I also really love to use sequins lately!

You’re accomplished a lot already in your crafting endeavors….in your book, what has been your proudest moment so far?

My proudest moment so far has been me joining the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge Blog team. I always loved to join their challenge so when they first asked me to be a guest designer, I was really proud! Then, a couple months later they asked me to join their design team. I was SO happy and I still am. :)

Do you have any goals or dream for yourself in crafting? (If you feel comfortable sharing them)

I certainly do! I would really love to join the Simon Says Stamp Artist Team one day, which would be a dream come true.

What has been your favorite part about blogging?

I think that is is just wonderful that people take their time to read my blog posts and that they leave comments! They always put a smile on my face!

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are not related to crafting…

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love to spoil my dog Jinny in my pare time. She is just so sweet! I also like to watch television with my parents and to go shopping with my mom. We always have a blast together! :)

How would you describe your personality?

I’m definitely creative-minded because I think a lot about card designs during the day or fun and creative things that I could try out! I am also sensitive and caring, but I love to laugh!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The United States for sure! I would really like to meet my crafty friends one day. I think that we would have so much fun together making cards and chatting! I would bring Belgian chocolate with me! :)

Name 5 things that you are most passionate about:

Family, cardmaking and blogging, being healthy, visiting friends and of course, my darling dog Jinny.

Featured Blogger- Julie Ebersole

featuredblogger-16For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of the bloggers that I follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

It’s not uncommon for me to get requests on a feature of a certain blogger and today’s is one that was requested a few times. You may recognize her as the gal behind many of the Hello, Monday videos and an instructer for the HOWnow online clasees at Ellen Hutson. Also, I can’t forget to mention she’s a fellow Washingtonian! Please join me in welcoming the talented Julie Ebersole!

As some of you may know, Julie’s mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and Julie has put her life on hold to be by her side and help during the recovery. This shows you exactly the kind of person she is. The crafting community is a sweet and tight one and the gals over at Ellen Hutson have put together a card drive for Julie and her parents. Details can be found HERE.

Now before you head on over and start prepping the cards you’ll be sending into the drive, take a few minutes and read today’s feature. You’ll get to know Julie a little better and that can help when you write her a note! *wink*

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

I started blogging back in December of 2005 to chronicle my rubber stamping and paper crafting projects, kind of as an “open” or “public” journal to myself. Back then, I think there may have been literally only a handful, if that, of people blogging on the topic.

How did you get introduced to stamping/ paper crafts?

My cousin always sent hand-stamped cards for celebrations like weddings and the birth of my children and I became very intrigued when she said she made them herself–at the time, I had no idea there was such a thing as “art stamping” and thought rubber stamps were only used in offices or on library cards to mark the due date. :)

Craft trends are constantly changing, which trend are you loving right now?

I’m not sure if these are still considered “trendy” or not, but I adore washi tape, everything woodgrain, Mister Huey’s Color Mists, and die cutting.

Is there a technique or style you admire, but aren’t able to “pull off” yourself?

Collage–I’m a fairly clean & simple card maker and I’m always amazed at the talents of those who can combine lots of different elements into something cohesive and beautiful!

How many hours do you spending crafting each week?

Since card design, and teaching/writing/video-graphy are actually my job as opposed to a hobby, I spend a fair amount of time at it. It’s not unusual for me to invest 30-40 hours a week in my studio/office, working out design concepts as well as project designs intended for classes, testing out techniques, filming & editing video work, photography work, writing, etc.

What tools or products never leave your craft table?

My Tonic Guillotine Paper Trimmer and my two trusty pairs of tweezers!

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to crafting…..

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spending time with my family, especially now that I have a grandbaby. She’s growing so fast and I love watching her develop and playing with her! I also enjoy supporting and watching my teenage son at his basketball events!

What is something about yourself that many people don’t know?

From the time I was in elementary school through high school, I played classical piano. But, I don’t own a piano myself, so I haven’t played in many years…!

You get to have an unlimited shopping spree, which store would you choose and why?

Pottery Barn. I’m terrible at interior design and have always wished my home looked like the pages in their catalog. :)

If you had to choose one food or drink to live off of, what would it be?
Bacon. I mean, seriously, what other choice could there possibly be under such dire circumstances???
Top 5 things you are most passionate about:

My family, my marriage, living positively, inspiring others through teaching, and doing a quality job with regards to my work.border

I’m sure that many of you have visited Julie’s blog, but in case you haven’t, be sure to take a peek. Her cards are so beautiful, her videos are fun to watch and while reading her posts, you’ll be able to truly see Julie’s bubbly personality.

Featured Blogger- Leigh Penner

featuredblogger-15

For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of the bloggers that I follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

My Featured Blogger today is a name that will be familiar to those who participate in the 10 Minute Craft Dash- she’s one of the new DT members! Please join me in welcoming the incredibly talented Leigh Penner to the blog!

Let’s get started with the questions….

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?
I started my blog in December 2005. I had been posting my layouts in a few different scrapbooking galleries and noticed that some online friends were starting to blog, so I decided to start, too. I thought it would be a good place to post photos of my kids for my brothers to see. I also thought it would be a great way to document events and then have the journaling at the ready when I wanted to scrapbook them.

How did you get the name of your blog?
I chose the name from my favourite Bible verse: John 10:10: “Jesus said: ‘I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.'” It’s my reminder to live life to the full.

When did you start paper crafting?
Just over 10 years ago. A friend of mine was selling Creative Memories & I hosted a beginner’s party. From day one, I was completely hooked! I started card making several years later, when it occured to me to make the most of my supplies. I didn’t start stamping until 2.5 years ago, but now it’s one of my favourite things to include on a card or layout.

What do you enjoy most about paper crafting?
I just love playing with pretty papers & stamps! I find it to be such a fabulous creative release! It calms me when I’m upset or stressed or just need some “alone time”… It just always makes me feel good.

How many hours do you spending crafting each week?
During the school year, probably between 5 & 10. In the summertime, between 10 & 20, easily.

If you could meet anyone in the crafting world, who would it be?
I would love to meet either Nichole Heady or Betsy Veldman. I think they are both so inspiring!

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to crafting…..

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love to read, go for bike rides & watch movies. I also have been taking tae kwon do with my kids for the last five years. Oh, and I love playing cards & board games (Scrabble & Settlers of Catan are my faves).

What is something about yourself that many people don’t know?
I’m have my second degree black belt in tae kwon do.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would you have with you?
Ooh, that’s tough. I have no idea!

Top 5 things you are most passionate about:
Jesus, my family & friends, stamping/scrapbooking/card making, taekwondo & good books.

I’m sure that many of you have visited Leigh’s amazing blog, but in case you haven’t, be sure to take a peek. Her cards are so gorgeous and she is a sweetheart.

Featured Blogger- Debby Hughes

featuredblogger-14

For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of the bloggers that I follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

My Featured Blogger today is taking the blog world by storm. She can be found on the Lil’ Inkers Designs, Clearly Besotted Stamps, CASE Study and Simon Says Stamp design teams. Her card designs are distinguishable and let’s not forget how gorgeous her work is. Please join me in welcoming Debby Hughes to the blog!

Let’s get started with the questions….

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

I started my blog back in 2010 as I was keen to take part in the challenge blogs I so enjoyed. I was very nervous and wasn’t sure if anyone would call by to visit. However, I found the crafting world to be a truly friendly place filled with wonderful people many of whom I am now delighted to call friends.

Where did the name of your blog come from?

I love everything green and bright lime green is a particular favourite. The ‘doodle’ comes from a childhood nickname. My family called me Debby Doodle which sort of turned into Doodle Doo and eventually they just used to call me Doo!

How would you describe your cardmaking style?

I certainly aspire to a clean and simple style. When I’m browsing around the web it is CAS card design which stops my mouse clicking and makes me pause for a closer look :) Within CAS though I like to be quiet varied in theme. One day I can be colouring a cute image with Copics and then another trying a more elegant or artistic style.

What is your favorite embellishment to add to cards?

At the moment I seem to add either enamel dots or sequins. They seem to have taken over from the rhinestones and pearls I used to use to accent my cards.

If you could meet anyone in the crafting world, who would it be?

Oh I have so many crafty idols it’s impossible to pick! One person who influences the craft industry so much though is Cath Edvalson, Trends Editor for Paper Crafts magazine and author of Moxie Fab World. I am so often inspired by the posts Cath pops up on Moxie Fab.

For those new to cardmaking, what tips or suggestions would you give?

Browse blogs and sites such as Pinterest and work out what style you find inspiring. Then note some of the design features used by those crafters and try and incorporate them into your own projects. Most important of all though is to have fun and enjoy creating!

Okay, now onto some fun questions…..

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time {besides crafting}?

My children seem to think being the family taxi service is what I enjoy doing LOL! But given a choice I like to read, garden and chill out with my husband with a little TV and my laptop :)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Anywhere I haven’t been yet! Now our children are a little older we are enjoying the travel options available to us which just seemed too difficult to pull off when they were younger. My eldest has certainly caught the travel bug and is always suggesting the furthest most exotic places to visit LOL.

If you had to choose one food or drink to live off of, what would it be?

Sad to say, but my friends know it’s true – Pepsi Max!

Name five things you’re passionate about:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Family
  • Trying my best at whatever I choose to do
  • Family :)

Now that you have gotten to know this sweet gal, I’m sure you’re dying to check out her amazing blog. I’m fairly certain you’ll be adding her blog to your blogroll- she always posts such beautiful creations!

Featured Blogger- Elena Roussakis

featuredblogger-13

For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one blogger that I admire and follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. I’ve featured craft, baking, lifestyle bloggers in the past and it’s been neat to see many of you start to follow some of the blogs I love.

Let’s get started with the feature today featuring the amazingly talented Elena Roussakis from Just ME!

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?
I’ve been blogging for 2 and a half years already!  I initially wanted an online space where I could show off some of my handmade cards for a small handful of clients who ordered invites and cards from me….

How and when did you get introduced to stamping?
I introduced myself to stamping 10 year ago, when I designed a custom monogram stamp and stamped the front of 300 wedding programs.  I didn’t know what I was doing!  Then, a good 5 years later, when I found myself a stay-at-home mom with no desire to clean house during naptime, I clicked on a stampin’ up add I found on facebook and hooked up with a local demo.  The story wrote itself from there… I became a demo (but the kind who didn’t like to push people to buy anything) and then discovered other stamp companies little by little.

When you started stamping, did you ever think you would be on design teams? What was your first reaction when you first got asked onto a team?
I didn’t know what a design team was when I first started, or how to be asked to join one – so no, I never thought I would be on a design team.  I felt all warm and fuzzy inside when I was asked to join my first team, hee hee.  It validated to me that my work was good!

You always create amazing, creative cards. How long does a typical card take to create?
Thanks, Paulina!  I am a slow crafter.  I don’t tend to work off of sketches, so whatever idea I had in my head usually morphs into something completely different by the end of a crafting session.  It takes me anywhere from 1-4 hours to create a card.  Not 4 hours in a row, mind you… (the cards that take me 4 hours in a row usually end up in the trash bin…)

The crafting/ blogging world constantly has new trends. What trends are you really into right now?
I am always so late to join the  trends.  By the time I decide I like a trend, it’s already half-way over, ha ha!  I love sequins, and wood veneers, but I tend to not be led by trends.  I will incorporate a touch of what’s trendy here and there, but I won’t put much thought into it.

Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
Pinterest is huge for me.  I am obviously very inspired by fellow card-makers and scrappers, but even more so by home decor and prints.  I think my favorite thing is seeing a print online and then setting out to recreate it with stamps and ink.

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to crafting…..

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Arg.  Someone introduced me to candy crush, so right now I’m enjoying that.  It’s great for the family too  when the kids see me playing they all crowd around and shout out suggestions.  just kidding…

What is something about yourself that many people don’t know?
*sucks in* there are so. many. things.  i am a huge klutz . i am pretty pale for a half-greek, halfegyptian.  i’ve known my husband since kindergarten.

If we were to spend the day going and doing your favorite things, what would that entail?
A lot of food. and there would be talking, laughing, coffee-drinking, some strolling, and maybe even some crafting.

You have your choice to spend the day with any celebrity, who would you choose and why?
There is so much that Bobby Flay could teach me in a day.  I can bake just fine, but the cooking is a little on the weak side… I think an intensive day with Bobby Flay would be awesome.  If he’s not available, I’ll take Ann Burrell.

Name 5 things that you are most passionate about:
My God, my family, my marriage, being creative and preserving memories.

I know that many of my sweet readers have seen Elena’s beautiful work, however, I have a feeling that some of my readers haven’t been introduced to her work. Here are the places you can find her:

Featured Blogger + New Contributor

featuredblogger-12

At the beginning of the year, I shared that 2013 was going to filled with new and exciting things here on the blog. I’ve had new sponsors, giveaways, hit some record breaking numbers and added my sister, Krista, as a contributor to the blog. As some of you know, she got an amazing job offer in San Francisco a couple months ago and has been living there ever since. She was optimistic that she would still be able to join me occasionally for posts, but alas, her schedule it quite busy. She gave me her blessing to start looking for a new contributor and that led me in the direction of my good friend, Tawsha {the ultimate networking person }. A rundown of information, a couple emails and I became connected with the amazing lady I’m featuring today.

I’m thrilled to be announcing that Hilari from Be Sweet will be joining me as a contributor here at Pretty Pink Posh. The moment I saw her blog, I fell in love. You can tell she’s passionate about what she does, and her recipes all sound so delish {and relatively easy}! I wanted to take the time to allow you all to get to know her and also share a few of her recipes that caught my eye.

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

My blog is called Be Sweet, and its essentially a compilation of everything that makes me smile… which is a lot of things! I used to have a smaller, personal blog, and so many people told me I should make it bigger, better! So that’s what I’m trying to do. My goal is to fill life with joy through all of the things that make me happy. I blog about sweet treats, simplified entertaining, and tips and tricks for adding joy to everyday living! On my site, you will find creative ideas that add joy to my life… and I hope yours, too! Ranging from kitchen to friends, from family to home, and travel to photography, I will share what makes me smile each day. It is my dream to spread joy to others, and by stopping by, I hope Be Sweet can put a smile on your face, if only for a few minutes out of your busy day! I’ve been officially blogging on Be Sweet since January, and I’ve learned so, so much along the way, and continue to learn and soak up as much as I can throughout this adventure!

When you first started your blog, did you have any specific goals or dreams for the future of your blog? If so, what were they?

I still feel like I’m first starting! I think my goals were (and still are) to simply make people happy. I’d love to see where this takes me, book writing, photo styling, magazine editing… the possibilities are limitless. But, I do want to stay true to me, my core, and what fires me up when choosing which future ventures to embark on- I want wherever this might take me to make me and others happy!

You bake so many delicious looking items….is there a specific recipe that’s your favorite?

Without a doubt, my favorite recipe is for Mrs. Schae bars {Here, they’re called Be Sweet Bars}! Growing up, my mom made these for skating competitions, school parties, lunch treats, and so many other wonderful activities. It’s these fabulous memories combined with the sweet and salty flavors that make this hands down, my favorite recipe!

Do you visit other blogs? If so, what are a few of your favorites?

I love to blog-hop, and so value the time, effort, and dedication blogging takes! A few of my favorites are The Be Present Project {Jessica provides such an honest and hopeful view of parenting, raising a family, and staying true to values}, Pomp & Circumstance {a gem I’ve recently discovered!}, and Amber Housley {one of my favorite lifestyle blogs that is incredibly well done!}, just to name a few!

How much time each week to you dedicate to your blog {approximately}?

Weekly, I spend anywhere from 15-20 hours a week dedicated to my blog. This varies depending on if I’m baking, recipe testing, or actively working on a craft or DIY project. All of this, combined with the writing, editing, and photography aspects can really add up! Oh, and social media… enough said :)

What has been your favorite part about blogging?

Definitely connecting with other bloggers! I have been fortunate enough to meet some of my favorite bloggers in person, form wonderful friendships, and really connect on a personal level that is more than just “screen deep.” It’s amazing to me the talent and skills so many women {and men!} have, and I feel lucky to be part of a community surrounded by all of this positivity.

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to blogging…..

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Well, I love to bake. But I think you got that message! My family means the world to me, so we love spending time together, playing games, cooking, and going on adventures. I love to travel and explore the world. I love to run, and am starting to get really into half marathons {thank goodness, otherwise all of those desserts are going to catch up with me!}. I also love just the simplicities of daily life, which include cleaning, laundry, and all of the “boring” things. To me, being organized and ready for the day ahead is one of the things I enjoy most!

You have a free Friday night, how would you spend it?

I’d head to my favorite restaurant, Local Taco, sit outside and enjoy a margarita, chips and salsa, and fish tacos. Then, Grant {the most incredible person in the world} and I would go for a walk, try a new dessert spot, and head home to watch a movie or catch up on our endless TiVo-ed shows! Not too exciting, but so wonderful!

If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would it be? Why?

Reese Witherspoon. I have always considered her a role model of mine {classy, put together, and always cheery!}, and her wardrobe… FAB!

You get to spend an unlimited amount at three stores, which stores would you pick?

1: Nordstrom. My goodness I could {and usually do} go crazy there! 2: Michael’s. I love to craft, use ribbon and glitter, and bake. The perfect store. 3: Sur la Table. Fortunately, there isn’t one in Nashville, otherwise I really would be in trouble! I love their cooking utensils, linens, and fun bakeware!

Name 5 things that you are most passionate about:

  1. Relationships
  2. Healthy Living
  3. Organization
  4. Exploring and seeing all the world has to offer
  5. Positivity and making the most out of each day!

As promised, I have some Be Sweet recipes links to share with you. Beware: you shouldn’t look at her site on an empty stomach. It’s dangerous! :)

Featured Blogger- Erika R

featuredblogger-10For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of the bloggers that I follow. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

Today’s blogger is a fellow Washingtonian and craft lover, she also has an adorable Etsy shop and a heart of gold. I had the privilege of meeting Erika at the Etsy Rain show {post here} and since then I’ve been following her blog and other social media sites. Her blog encompasses the things she enjoys, who she is and randomness that makes her even more loveable.

Let’s get started with the questions….

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

This is actually my second blog. I had a now-defunct blog that I started in fall of 2009, after the husband and I got married. I got tired of posting just married-life related stuff, so that’s when I switched over to a new name and new content in early 2011.

What inspires you for your posts?

I started the blog because I was in really creatively frustrated at work (I’ve since changed day jobs) and worked nights, which turns out, can make you lonely and bored during the day! Writing a blog was a perfect filler.

Do you ever find it hard to come up with blog content?

I actually very rarely have a hard time coming up with blog content. I commute by bus every day and it’s about a half hour ride so I use a lot of that time brainstorming and thinking up new stuff. I also sort of plan out my month of content so I’ll always sort of know what’s coming or what I should write about.

Are there particular posts that you enjoy doing more than others?

Inspiration comes in many forms for me. I get a lot of crazy ideas lying in bed at night, while running or on my bus commute home from work. I try not to get too inspired from other bloggers because I want to be original as I can. I find inspiration in what I wear, what I cook, what I see and what my husband tells me.

Do you keep a blog schedule, or do you post whenever you’re inspired?

Regarding the schedule, I have a rough schedule but if I decide I don’t like a post, or I have a great idea, I’ll go with the inspiration. This year I’ve also released a lot of pressure from blogging everyday because I do work full time, I do have a full life, and sometimes I can’t write a new post 5 times a week.

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to blogging…..

How would you describe your personality?

My personality is a little bit out there– definitely creative-minded, caring and sensitive. I am very shy around people I know, but open up with people I know. I am also someone who RARELY sits still. Ever. Unless I’m asleep at night.

What do you enjoy doing in your “spare time”?

Spare time? Haha. Well I do own a handmade shop called rouge + whimsy with my line of purses, totes and clutches so that takes up a lot of time, but otherwise I love to cook and try new recipes. I also run, play with my dog and work on my house with my husband.

If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and why?

If I could meet any celebrity, I would have to see Ellen DeGeneres, because it would meant that I was on her show and she was talking about my blog…haha. Otherwise, I love Tina Fey. She’s brilliant.

If you had a reality tv show about your life, what would we see a lot of?

A reality show about my life would be a lot of me running around being late to things, scrambling on things… also a lot of me laughing, snoozing my alarm and drinking coffee. You’d probably spy my corgi a lot too, because he’s a ham. :)

Name 5 things that you are most passionate about:

My faith in Jesus, my family, handmade/ blog community, eating healthy and loving others.

Featured Blogger- Cristina Kowalczyk

featuredblogger-9

It’s the first Monday of the month and you know what that means- it’s time for a brand new Featured Blogger post! I seriously love introducing you all to bloggers from all over the blogosphere and today I’m thrilled to bring you someone I have admired for quite some time.

For my crafty blog readers, you will recognize the picture above- it’s that of the ultra talented, superstar crafter Cristina Kowalczyk! She has been in countless magazines, shared her ideas on various design teams, crowned Stamping Royalty in 2011 and was the winner of the Paper Crafts 2011 Gallery Idol. Oh my, and let’s not even get started on the fact that she’s a published writer as well!

Without further ado, let’s get to know Cristina a little bit….

Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

You can find me at mypapersecret.blogspot.com. I started in 2010 because I had spent a few month prior admiring other people’s card via their blogs and it seemed like everyone was having so much fun, doing challenges and leaving comments for each other. I had the sense that it was a real community and I wanted to be a part of that. I originally thought I would call my blog Confessions of a Secret Papercrafter, but my husband convinced me that that was too long, so I ended up with My Paper Secret.

How did you first get into papercrafting?

Ten years ago I did all the paper goods for my wedding, so my interest has been there for a while. But the first time I really got hooked was at a Stampin’ Up! workshop in 2009. I happened to go to it after a difficult time in my life and I think it helped me mentally escape some of the stuff I was going through. Since then, cardmaking has often been a sort of savior for me. No matter what else is happening, it’s something that makes me happy.

How would you describe your card-making style?

Clean and simple, for sure. I gravitate toward more a graphic style, too.

Is there a technique or style you admire, but aren’t able to “pull off” yourself?

I love that sort of fresh, wispy, layered look. Do you know what I’m talking about? People like Clouds Shadler and Tina Fussell and Danielle Flanders do it well. It’s not shabby layered. More modern and spare than that. I always love that, but the few time I’ve attempted it have *not* been pretty. Ha!

List five things that never leave your craft table:

Tombow tape runner, Stamp-a-ma-jig, foam square adhesive (actually, they’re foam hexagons- I use Stampin’ Up!’s version), Momento Tuxedo Black ink, scissors

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to crafting….

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love reading. Love love love. I am a sucker for taking long walks around our little town, watching basically anything on HGTV or Bravo, and hanging with my husband and kids.

If you had to choose one food or drink to live off of, what would it be?

I’m going to choose one of each because in my mind they sort of go together- guacamole and margaritas.

What is something about yourself that not many people know?

I’m scared of animals. All of them.

Do you have a favorite quote?

This is a long one, but I have it memorized because I love it so much. It’s from Martha Graham, and I can only assume she’s referring to dance, but to me it’s really about any artistic endeavor or act of creations.

“There is vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression becomes unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is; nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep directly open to and ware of the urges that move you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others. ”

Top five things you are most passionate about:

My kids, my husband, writing, cards, and learning.

Okay, now that you have gotten to know this sweet gal, I’m sure you’re dying to check out her amazing blog. I’m fairly certain you’ll be adding her blog to your blogroll- she always posts such beautiful creations!

Featured Blogger- Amber Kemp- Gerstel

featuredblogger-8Good morning!

For those new to my blog, on the first Monday of each month, I feature one of my favorite bloggers. When I read blogs, I always enjoy getting to know the person BEHIND the blog. Whether it be a crafty blogger, a lifestyle blogger or a fellow young single gal- I love putting away the formalities and having a “conversation” with a blogger I enjoy.

Today I’m thrilled to be introducing you all to a Amber Kemp- Gerstel from Damask Love. I was able to meet Amber a couple years back {before she became a blogging extraordinaire} and she is a doll. If you flip through paper crafting magazines, you will often see her beautiful items gracing the pages. Not only does she create and blog her crafting projects, she also has a heart of gold. The tragedy in Newtown, CT tugged at Amber’s heart and she took action and put together a wonderful cause for that community. She was able to raise thousands of dollars and assemble lots of kits for the children in that town. Her report can be found here.

Let’s get started with some blogging questions!
Tell us about your blog. When and why did you start it?

When you create tons and tons of crafty stuff like I do, there is an urge to share it with all the other crafty people out there! That is precisely why I started Damask Love – as a place for me to share my projects and creations; a place to give a little bit of purpose to my hobby! Over time, the mission of Damask Love has evolved. Today, I use my blog as a place to give inspiration to crafters at all levels. I do my best to provide clear instructions for each of the projects I post so that anyone can follow along!

Do you ever find it hard to come up with blog content?

There was a time when by blog schedule was a day-to-day battle. I had no plan, really, Each day, I’d try to come up with something to post on the following day. It was chaotic and way too much pressure! When I started the new Damask Love, I also started a ongoing list of blog post ideas. Ideas that popped into my head throughout the day. Today, I have a list of over 100 blog post ideas, and whenever I’m feeling tapped out, I refer to that list.

Is there a particular feature (on your blog) that is your favorite?

When I launched the new Damask Love, I added several features to the blog that would contribute to the theme and continuity of the content. Of these features, Office Hours is my favorite! The Office Hours feature, allows me to directly answer questions that are submitted by readers. Questions like: “How do you take your photos?” or “Where do you find inspiration for your projects?” This features helps me feel like I am interacting directly with my blog readers, which is great!

What has been your favorite part about blogging?

The best part about blogging is that I am the boss of my own blog! It’s a great feeling to control my own content, when it will be posted, how it will be designed. It’s like being the editor of my own magazine! Blogging also provides such a great format for interacting with readers! I love reading all of the emails and comments! I also have a great time interacting with readers on my Facebook page, where I can have more of a conversation with everyone! Last, blogging is a great avenue for growing my own skills as a crafter and businesswoman. Growing a blog is a full time job and I enjoy every minute of it. I enjoy learning to strategies for reaching new readers and trying out techniques for engaging my readers in the content of Damask Love. All in all, blogging is the perfect format for me to share my passion for creativity and eventually growing that passion into successful business.

When you first started your blog, did you have any specific goals or dreams for the future of your blog? If so, what were they?

I started my blog two years ago, in January of 2010. At the time, I really had no plans for it. Just a place for me to post fun photos of my project. That was it. No expectations. No goals. Boy, has that changed! Today, I treat my blog as a business. It’s a place for me to reach creative people who enjoy all things DIY. Everyday I challenge myself to provide unique and creative content that will engage my readers. I strive to work with other bloggers who may teach me some of their own strategies for blog growth. I do my best to remain an relevant and active participant in the blogging community so that I can soak in as much as possible! Every day is a learning experience with blogging and the “field” is always changing! That is the great part of being a blogger. I am constantly learning and challenging myself. It never gets old.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to take their blog to the next level?

Be a good blog neighbor! Before I launched the revamped Damask Love, I sort of existed in a vaccuum by myself. I posted to my own blog but never went much further than that.

To take your blog to the next level, I think it’s imperative to stay on top of the other blogs out there. What are they posting? What trends do you notice? Who’s content to you aspire to? Who could you collaborate with? All of these questions require that you get involved in the blogging community!  That said, this does take a lot of work! Each day, I give myself an hour to browse my Google Reader. This time allows me to see what is out there and how I can contribute to the themes and trends I see. Also, I am always inspired by the work of other, which gives me more ideas for how I can  make Damask Love a better blog!

Okay, now onto some fun questions that are non-relevant to blogging…..

Besides crafting, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spare time? What is that? I’m not terribly familiar with that term!!

Honestly, I don’t have a ton of spare time. Most of the minutes in my day are filled with work or blogging…and I really wouldn’t have it any other way. I love being busy. To me, busy means blessed. If I do have a few minutes of down time, I’m usually on the couch with Andrew (my husband) watching TV and catching up on emails. It’s certainly not a glamourous way to spend my time, but I love it.

You get to spend the day with any celebrity, would would it be? Why?

Oprah is the easy winner here. In my imagination, Oprah and I are besties. We eat beet salad together and talk about books that we’ve read. We go on shopping sprees at Bergdorfs and we hang out in fluffy robes at her home in Chicago…and sometimes Ina Garten comes over and we all cook together.

If you walk into my craftroom, chances are I’m watching OWN. I admire Oprah’s business sense, her motivation for success and her constant aspirations to better herself through being more self-aware. Mostly, I love Oprah because I really an truly believe that we could kick it. If I met her, I don’t think I’d really be starstruck. I’d just wanna go hang out and have a cup of coffee with her.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Greece. Hands down – mostly because I want to eat my way through the country and lay around on white sandy beaches all day!

List 5 things you are passionate about:

My husband. My craftroom. My shoes. My home. Carbs.
